Home of The Killer Whales!

I always love to hear from parents so please call me with any questions you might have about band. I’m at 2 different schools so my cell is the best way to reach me. Evenings and weekends are best as I’m making music with children during the day!

  • How do I obtain a beginning band instrument for my child?

Our local music store, McPherson’s Music, is your best avenue for a quality band instrument. I encourage you to talk with McPherson’s about choosing a reputable brand, no matter where you intend to purchase, as they are the only musical instrument repair store on the island, and you may be stopping by sooner that later if you end up with an instrument that is not well made.

  • Does the school have a band instrument my child can borrow for the school year?

We have a limited number of school instruments for those students whose families may have difficulty getting one. Please call or email me if that is the case.

  • What can I do to help my child be successful in band?

Providing a quality instrument, book and music stand is a great start! Your child should have a space to practice every night at home where there are limited distractions, (such as a TV on in the same room or little brother pestering). Then encourage every effort. There always comes a time when discouragement sets in and progress seems sooooo slow. Help them to persevere and at the end of the school year they will be amazed at what they can play!

I suggest that band students practice at home for 20 minutes each day. The embrochure (how they hold their mouth for good sound) needs daily exercise to strengthen muscles to produce a pleasing tone. Your child will sound pretty much the same at the end of the school year as they did at the beginning if they are only playing their instrument once a week during band class. Daily 20 minutes of practice is essential for success.
