First Student Bus Co is requesting that all students with any bus route or stop changes need to hand a transportation note to the bus driver. This means parents must contact the school office before 2:00pm to have the note written. No note = no change in stops Thank you for your help in this incredibly huge safety issue.
Looking for family activities? Check out the Ketchikan Public Library. There is literally something going on all the time! Their calendar is full of children & whole family activities! The February calendar is on the main page. Have fun!
Student Absence and
If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please contact the school office (907) 225-4128 first thing in the morning. All absences are unexcused until a parent/guardian contacts the office to excuse their student.
We are noticing many parents showing up at 3:00pm to pick up their child early. Our school day does not get over until 3:25 Kindergarten and 3:30 1st through 6th, with a lot of learning still happening right up until the dismissal bell. If you could contact the office first thing in the morning so the classroom teacher can plan for the early dismissal, that would be very helpful and appreciated. It will avoid having so many classroom interruptions. Thank you!
For student safety, PLEASE remember that the playground will not have adult supervision until 8:35am. It is very important that students are not dropped off prior to that time. If your child walks to school, please talk to them about this topic so they do not arrive before supervision is available. There will also be no adult supervision on any playgrounds after 3:30pm.

Friday, March 31st 6:00pm-9:00pm ~ Such a fun night to be had by all involved! We are combining Kid's Night Out and Dr. Seuss Celebration! Parents bring your Houghtaling kiddos to school and sign them in. Then they stay and play and eat, and you get to go rest, shop, out to dinner, whatever! Pick them up at 9:00 and its a fun night for all. Many classrooms are open for crafts and fun games. There will be a homemade dinner, milk and water for drinks, and popcorn too! All students will need to have a registration form filled out by parents/guardians. Pre-registration helps speed up the sign in process, but we will have forms available at the front door as well. Parents, you must sign in and sign out your child for this event. If you are allowing another parent to bring your child for you YOU MUST CONTACT THE OFFICE PRIOR TO THE EVENT. The cost is $12.00 for one child, $20.00 for 2 children, and $30.00 for a family. Limited scholarships are available. ~ If you want to volunteer to help at this event please call the office at 225-4128.
If you are interested in registering your preschooler for the 2017-2018 school year, please stop by the Houghtaling Office for a screening/registration packet. Once your packet is received with a copy of a birth certificate and immunization records it will be considered complete. We will accept packets starting Feb 1, 2017. To enroll in preschool students have to be age four on or before September 1, 2017.
Houghtaling is now accepting registration for Kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year. If your child will be 5 years old on or before September 1st, you may stop by the Houghtaling office for a packet. We will not hold spots! Completed packets must be turned in and consist of all forms signed, and a copy of a live birth certificate & current shot records. ** Parents ~ all current preschool families must fill out a Kindergarten registration form.** ** You are not automatically moved up!**
The Houghtaling Science Fair is happening in May! Put your thinking caps on and get your projects planned! You may pick up a Science Fair Manuals in the office or you can click SCIENCE FAIR above to print one out. Display boards will be for sale in the office at $3.00 for a white one, and $5.00 for a blue, red, yellow, or black one. May 8th all projects are due to your classroom teacher. May 9th will be set up and judging of the projects. May 10th there will be classroom walk throughs and an evening reception for family, friends, and community members.
Information regarding Summer School has been given to your child's classroom teacher. If you feel your child needs to attend, or wish to talk about the criteria for attending, please contact your child's teacher directly. We have 2 big requests...
PLEASE do not park in the upper lot by the flag pole - it is marked with yellow cross hatch lines. This is an access aisle used for our delivery trucks for mail, freight and lunches.
Many times parents are visiting to quickly drop something off but it creates a big problem for our delivery trucks who come throughout the day. This is their parking area and many times it is blocked by a vehicle. There is extra parking now at the end of the upper parking lot down by the Kindergarten doors, and all along the street on Baranof Avenue.
PLEASE do not park in the HANDICAP parking by the office, unless you are licensed to do so. By all means if you are licensed to use the handicap parking there are two available for your use. We are obligated to contact the Police Department if there is a car parked in a handicap spot without a handicap sticker visible. It is a $250.00 fine and the Ketchikan Police Department will ticket you.
